Blog 11 - The wicca man

This is to address the possible concerns of many people out there, maybe who have seen posts on youtube from a certain Christian ‘Professor’ who makes wild claims about the traditional burning of the Wicca Man. He seems to believe that we are performing human sacrifice of abducted Americans here at my home shire at the Butzer Ancient Farm.

 

The Roman general Julius Caesar whilst attacking the free tribes of Celtic Gaul made claim that we Celts carried out human sacrifice by means of placing people inside huge wicca men and burning them.

 

It is now well known to scholars that Julius Caesar was a brilliant self publicist, and politician, who wanted his deeds (some would say atrocities) to be seen back in Rome as heroic. It therefore made sense for him to present his enemy as being savage, fearsome and unprincipled as this would make him appear all the greater in history. It worked for him too.

 

It remains true to say that there is no archaeological evidence of wicca men of mass human sacrifice by such means, most likely he saw a beltane rite of burning great fires representing the cleaning away of the old year, and invented the rest.

 

Butzer ancient farm is not a pagan institution, it it run by reconstructive archaeologists, not Druids or Witches. If it were otherwise we would still use straw, ours is the religion of ‘LIFE’, we are not Romans.

 

The Beltane event there each year where a Wicca man is burned is a great celebration of culture as we have traditional dance and music, and the local people from miles around turn out to enjoy this.

 

And the Wicca man is stuffed full....of straw.
