Blog - Summer Solstice Handfasting

One of the nicer duties of a Druid is to perform a ceremony known as a handfasting. The couple on the right approached me after the summer solstice sunrise 2009. This is their video.

My criteria for saying yes to performing a handfasting are: Both parties are over 18, are in love, come of their own free will, have known each other long enough to make a commitment, and take it seriously.

No longer a legally recognised form of marriage in the UK, the public acknowledgement of two people in love making a promise to one another before their gods is still very popular today. Its meaning and beauty is undiminished.

I hope that one day soon the ‘Church and State’ will end their legal monopoly on marriage and Druids may once again serve our community by providing legally valid handfasting once again.
