The unthinkable has happened.
Stonehenge expert and author Dennis Price is the first
person ever to break ranks with the archaeological profession to criticise the handling
of human remains.
On his web site are images and other detailed evidence, suggesting
that the handling of the world famous ‘King of Stonehenge’ or ‘Amesbury Archer’ was
anything but careful, professional or respectful.

Throughout
our campaign to see the return and reburial of the Stonehenge Ancestors, we have
encountered an Establishment that recognises the interests of science and education,
but not the people who feel the strongest of connections to the remains.
In recent
decades, the archaeological profession has done a masterful job of presenting itself
as a body that is professional, infallible, altruistic, capable of self governance
and motivated purely by the joy of knowledge, so perhaps this is why the Establishment
has always treated it so favourably.
We are appalled and very concerned that one of
our great Ancestors, taken from the wider Stonehenge landscape, could have been mistreated
or neglected whilst in the hands of certain archaeologists. That this has seemingly
gone unnoticed and unchallenged by their professional body, the IFA (Institute of
Field Archaeologists), is the most shocking revelation.
It is one kind of desecration
to violate someone’s resting place, even if that brings forth an awareness of their
life and adds to our knowledge of the times they lived in, because this at least
can and should be mitigated by later reburial with honour.
It is another matter entirely
to allow these remains to be taken out of their protective boxes and handled on literally
scores of occasions within a brief time frame; this practice has resulted in the
remains suffering irreparable and demeaning damage, all of which goes completely
against the express rules and Code of Conduct of the IFA itself.
This will not go
unchallenged.
