The ancient Druids had no links with Stonehenge did they?
Julius Caesar was unambiguous on this subject when he wrote,
“The Druidic doctrine is believed to have been found existing in Britain and thence imported into Gaul; even today those who want to make a profound study of it generally go to Britain for the purpose.”
In other words, if the Celts were responsible for ushering in the Iron Age to Britain, the Druids were already there in what must by definition have been the Bronze Age. If there’s a more than reasonable chance that druids were in existence in the Bronze Age, then it’s not completely out of the question that they originated even earlier in the Neolithic period, when Stonehenge was being built.
Essentially the same!
Very little is written of Druid beliefs by classical writers, thus, mistakenly many scholars assume that little can be known. Yet they ignore the simple truth that the Druids were teachers and priests of Celtic society, and they would hardly have different beliefs from their community about which we know a great deal thanks to the rich folk lore of Ireland Scotland and Wales, and affirmation from modern archaeology.
What we can deduce summarises as follows:
Nature is sacred, all things in creation have spirit
The universal spirit to which we all belong is part male, part female, of these all gods and goddess’s are manifestations. The human spirit is immortal. After death on earth we pass to another realm, the land of the ever young, to recover and enjoy until ready for rebirth here on earth. Truth and honour, justice and balance, strength and courage, beauty and creativity, love and responsibility are the attributes most strived for.
Ancient Druids did practice magic.
Men and women were equal in early Celtic society, there were complex laws that applied to all, people were probably much better off and much happier then than for many centuries after the Iron age ended.
What do most modern Druids believe?
