Stonehenge in its spiritual and inspirational context belongs to the people of the world, with very special significance to those who follow the Celtic Pagan traditions and systems of faith, and among those, naturally, the Druids
Stonehenge is a world heritage site, administered year round by English Heritage which is part of the Ministry of Culture Media and Sport.
Only four of the eight Celtic sabbats have open public access to the Circle: These are Winter Solstice, Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, and Autumn Equinox.
Druids participate actively in ' round table' forums with English Heritage and other authorities such as the Police to ensure that peaceful enjoyment of this window of access remains open to all, and year on year builds to a better experience for those who attend.
The Druids today, as in the distant past, revere and learn from nature. Although the name ‘Druid’ is attributed in classical literature to the Celtic Period that followed the completion of Stonehenge, many believe that this ancient spirituality continued many of the traditions and ideas of its builders and we continue to celebrate the great cycles of nature at Stonehenge today.
Not all Druids or Druid orders are extrovert and public facing. Many prefer to work alone or within their communities, gathering at locations sacred to their home areas and leading celebrations there.
Only a few brave the masses, sometimes numbering 30000 at the summer solstice, to serve those seeking the spiritual and cultural essence of the occasion and who maybe have questions that would otherwise go unanswered were we not there.
These few, drawn from many Druid Organisations and backgrounds, together with our family of Pagan friends that actively contribute, are represented here.
It is our aim to conduct the traditional rites, such that we all may play a part without conflict or competition as is our way, and as best serves the public and respects the spirit of the place.
The idea for this web site
This site was established in 2007 by Frank Somers, a practicing Druid actively serving at Stonehenge.
Frank is a media spokesperson for Druidry, has led both summer and winter solstices at Stonehenge, and organised unique events in Westminster and Stonehenge.
The idea came after speaking with an Author who was trying to find a reliable and unbiased Druid web site about Stonehenge and who pointed out that he had not been able to clearly identify one.
There are of course many web sites about Stonehenge, and many pages written by Druids, but Frank set out to provide a site that would help people interested in either Stonehenge, the Druids, or both to find reliable information.
www.stonehenge-druids.org is run today by Frank and his circle of druid colleagues from the Aes Dana Grove as a trusted source for anyone with an interest, and covers stories of interest ranging beyond that of our grove.
