The Stonehenge Exclusion
Years
and Onwards
Prolog
"A nation that forgets
its past is doomed to repeat it."
Winston Churchill
I'm one of the younger arrivals on the
Druid scene at Stonehenge, older Druids have made it clear to
me that I lack awareness of the history that brought us to this
present place and that I should learn of it.
As we move forward and consider the future
of British Paganism, and within that, the ever important Druid
ceremonies at Stonehenge, it is necessary for those involved now
to pause and understand how we arrived at our present position
and to give credit to all those involved from all sides. Especially
those who made the difference.Without that effort it is probable
that many of us today would not have free and open access to our
sacred temple, as limited as that still is.
So here we will recall Stonehenge before
the exclusion, the political environment of the time, the battle
of the beanfield, the exclusion years, the campaign to free the
henge, the people involved, the formation of the 'round table',
and how this has evolved into a positive relationship that exists
now between ourselves, the Police and English Heritage.
This is a part of British
history.
This is not recalled now to
once more re-open old wounds or stir up any bad feeling that belongs
in the past
Trust and communication has
replaced the divide and the Authorities, English Heritage and
the Police work alongside us to protect and improve open access.
It would be wrong to sweep this story
under the carpet and forget it, just as it would be wrong to throw
away the progress that has been made since and all the potential
for things to improve year on year into the future. Time has moved
on, we have all moved on. So with forgiveness in mind, please
remember that the Druid serves truth, and that the Bard must tell
and sing of events gone before so that all may know from whence
they come. Just as forgiveness and reconciliation were achieved
in South Africa by all sides acknowledging the past and telling
their story as part of letting go and moving forward together,
that is what we must do.
For our personal salute to the
people of that time, Jim and I played this song by The Levellers
at Stonehenge Summer Solstice this year.
The Levellers Battle
Of The Beanfield lyrics
I thought I heard something calling
me
I've seen the pictures on TV
And I made up my mind that I'd go and see
With my own eyes
It didn't take too long to hitch a ride
With a guy going south to start a new life
Past the place where my friend died
Ten years ago
Down the 303 at the end of the road
Flashing lights - exclusion zones
And it made me think it's not just the stones
That they're guarding
As the sun rose on the beanfield
They came like wolf on the fold
And no, they didn't give a warning
They took their bloody toll
I seen a pregnant woman
Lying in blood of her own
I seen her children crying
As the police tore apart their home
And no they didn't need a reason
It's what your votes condone
It seems they were committing treason
By trying to live on the road
And I say,
Hey, hey, now can't you see
There's nothing here that you can call free
They're getting their kicks
They're laughing at you and me, Bastards
Remember what you heard...
